The problem provably fair solves

At a traditional online casino you trust that the random number generator is honest, usually because an independent testing lab has certified it. Provably fair games add a second layer: every single result can be checked by the player after the bet.

The idea is that the casino commits to its part of the random input before you bet, and cannot change it afterwards without being caught.

Server seed, client seed and nonce

Before you play, the casino generates a secret server seed and shows you only its hash, a fingerprint usually made with SHA-256. You can set your own client seed, and each bet has a nonce, a counter that goes up by one every round.

The result of each bet is calculated from the server seed, your client seed and the nonce, typically with HMAC-SHA256. Because the server seed was locked in before you bet, the casino cannot pick a result that suits it.

How to verify a bet yourself

When you rotate your seed pair, the casino reveals the old server seed. First, hash it and check that the hash matches the one you were shown before playing. Then enter the server seed, client seed and nonce into the casino's verifier or an independent calculator and confirm it produces the same result as your bet.

If the hash does not match, or the recalculated result differs, the game was not fair. In practice, change your client seed regularly and spot-check a few bets after rotating.

What provably fair does not prove

Provably fair proves the result was not altered after you bet. It does not prove the game has a fair house edge, that the casino will pay your withdrawal or that the operator is properly licensed. Always check the stated RTP or house edge and the casino's reputation too.

It also usually applies only to a casino's own original games, such as dice, crash, plinko and mines. Third-party slots and live dealer games rely on the provider's certified random number generator instead.

Why it matters when choosing a casino

A casino that offers provably fair originals, publishes its verification method and lets you change your client seed is being open about how results are produced. Treat it as one trust signal alongside licensing, withdrawal terms and responsible-gambling tools, not as a guarantee on its own.
